X-Gluc has gained international acceptance as an accurate indicator of the presence of E. Coli in several practical applications. It reduces false positives and negatives found with other methods.
X-Gluc is a chromogenic substrate used to detect β-glucuronidase, an enzyme produced by the E. Coli bacterium. Upon reduction, X-Gluc produces a localised colour, making it useful in identifying GUS gene presence in most cell types and detecting the GUS gene fusion marker in plants.
